Justice, Justice You Shall Pursue. Dueteronomy 16:20

Today, we continue this tradition in both word and deed- speaking, educating, and acting on issues of racial equality, health, the environment, and food scarcity. Consider joining our monthly meetings and helping us serve the community

Feeding the Hungry

Food Pantry: In spring of 2020 our Community Food Project (CFP) partnered with Metro Food Rescue and Hospitality House providing food for 75 local families in need. If someone you know is in need of food, call Deb Ford at 248-660-0156.  We will return the call within 24 hours. Every Friday morning, rain or shine, our volunteers are packaging food to be put in our neighbors' cars from 10:30am -11:30am. If you are interested in helping, contact 248-660-0156.

Capuchin Kitchen: Once a month since 2007, TKA members have staffed the serving line at Detroit’s Capuchin Kitchen.  The Kitchen serves over 400 meals to needy Detroiters of all faiths, ages, and circumstances.

Yad Ezra: This food pantry program for Jewish residents has been serving the community for many years. Several times each year, TKA volunteers help deliver food to home-bound Yad Ezra clients.

Serving the Community

Mitzvah Day: On Sunday,  April 27, 2024 our whole community will gather to do mitzvot and help others. There are many projects to get yourselves involved in, feeding the hungry, caring for elderly, protecting the environment and many more.

Lighthouse: Formerly known as SOS, Lighthouse endeavors to build equitable communities that alleviate poverty in partnership with and in service to individuals, families, and organizations. For one week during the year we deliver meals and goods to the shelter. Lighthouse 2024 is June 8-14.

Relay for Life: Many members of our TKA family have been impacted by cancer. To show our support, raise awareness and money, every summer since 2007 an enthusiastic group of members organizes a booth at the American Cancer Society’s annual  Relay for Life. In 2024, volunteers met at the Detroit Zoo in support of cancer research.

Social Justice Book Club: Formed in 2017, the Book Club reads and discusses books on issues facing both the social fabric of our country and the Jewish community. The group has dynamic, facilitated conversations about justice issues, including such topics as human rights, choice, gun control, voter challenges, immigration, religious discrimination, racism, and their effect on our society. Led by Professor Tara Hayes, the group meets on Sunday mornings, 10 times per year using Zoom and in-person settings when possible.

Green Team

TKA is a part of the Jewish Climate Leadership Coalition. A network of Jewish community organizations who recognize the existential threat and moral urgency of climate change and commit to take action.

The potential power of our community’s collective action is immense. By working together, the impacts of individual organizations will be amplified, rippling throughout networks, neighborhoods, and beyond.

Ask us about our Climate Action Plan and help us protect the earth.
