B’nai Mitzvah

The Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah have been given a distinctive significance in our congregation. Each child is guaranteed to have his or her own unique date. No need to share! TKA is proud that we were the first congregation in this area to do this and it remains true today.

Our students take a most active role in their bar or bat mitzvah service. They lead prayer, chant Torah and Haftara, and offer teaching (d’var) to the congregation on their Torah portion. Students also pursue meaningful mitzvah project(s), such as working at animal shelters, food banks, environmental projects, city of Detroit initiatives, sports leagues for underprivileged youth, and many more.

We are deeply proud of the significant number of our students who have chosen to pursue careers as Jewish professionals or who have taken on key Jewish leadership roles as adults. We believe it all begins in our B’nai Mitzvah program which maintains Temple Kol Ami’s commitment to serious fun.
